A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Defenders:
Sometimes we need reminders of who we are. I received one in the past week. One of our members, Jim Lewis of Ruston was sent home from the hospital dying. His main thoughts were not of feeling sorry for himself, but of his duty as a man and a lawyer. He worried about his files getting into the right hands and the care of his clients. His thoughts exemplify what we all should aspire to be as attorneys. We did not choose a job when we became lawyers, we chose a lifestyle.
With that in mind our goals for the year should center on strengthening our association. We must increase our membership, for to affect change that benefits us and our clients we have strength in numbers. You will note that your dues notice is attached. We want more than your money, we want you.
We want you to participate in the association. We have goals in the legislature to not just thwart the opposition but to pursue positive gains in an era of budget cuts. We can’t do that without a politically active association.
We want you to participate in committees to improve the quality of criminal defense law practice through committees such as the Lawyer Assistance and Defense – for criminal defense attorneys facing sanctions for the proper and ethical defense of their clients or the Amicus Committee-amicus briefs on relevant issues, often in support of members' cases.
We are going to explore community outreach, so that we can maximize the membership’s profile in local communities, while expanding our influence so that we can attain our goals.
Please join with us to improve our practices, our association and our communities.
