Committee Mission Statements

Death Penalty Committee:

The Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers opposes the imposition of the death penalty under all circumstances. The Death Penalty Committee shall advance this core principle by advocating for individual due process and justice for all those charged with capital crimes or sentenced to death and by working toward the overall improvement of the criminal justice system.

The Committee shall act as a resource and encourage involvement of its members in ongoing capital prosecutions, appeals, post-conviction proceedings, and clemency applications.

The Committee adopts the American Bar Association Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases (2003) and deems them as necessary standards to ensure constitutionally required high quality representation in capital cases.

The Committee shall provide training and consultation for capital defense attorneys, engage in public outreach and education on issues relating to capital punishment, and advocate for continued improvement in the criminal justice system.

The Committee shall coordinate its efforts with local and national professional legal organizations, the defense bar, and the membership and all standing committees of this organization.

Lawyers Assistance Committee:

LACDL is committed to protecting the ethical and legal representation of clients and will assist lawyers who are threatened with discipline either by the bar or courts for the ethical and proper assertion of the attorney/client privilege, disqualification of counsel issues, contempt of court and subpoenas to defense lawyers to obtain information in ways that are in violation of the Rules of Ethics and the Rules of Evidence.

Membership Committee:

The Membership Committee's Goals are Twofold:

In striving to meet these goals, the Membership Committee will work closely with the staff in the State Office to manage a long range plan to increase the membership and will work with all LACDL Committees to advertise and improve the services of LACDL to existing and potential members. The Membership Committees current goal is to sustain the current membership and add 150 new members by the year 2008, making LACDL’s membership strong. The Committee, seeking to meet this goal, will collaborate with and provide member oversight for the mass marketing strategies managed and directed by LACDL’s Membership Committee and State Office staff marketing membership to all of the Criminal Defense community for purposes of recruitment, as well as marketing membership to the LACDL community for purposes of retention. In addition, the Committee will strive to supplement the marketing efforts of Staff in the State Office by identifying and initiating new members and member recruitment efforts that can be carried out by volunteers on the local level. Whereas, membership growth is both a factor of retention and recruitment efforts, as a result, membership will grow, thereby increasing dues revenues and helping to maintain the budgetary requirements of the Organization.

Public Defender Committee:

The mission of the LACDL Public Defender Committee is to promote and support the fair administration of the criminal justice system for indigent adults and juveniles; to take those steps necessary to promote and improve the quality and scope of legal representation provided to indigent persons; to provide knowledge, guidance, and informational assistance to those members of the LACDL and Louisiana Bar Association who are serving or intending to serve as appointed legal counsel for indigent persons in pending legal matters; to protect the integrity, independence, and advocacy of the criminal defense profession; and to support, promote and preserve those rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Louisiana Constitution to indigent persons accused of crime.

Publications and Website Committee:

The goal of the Publications committee is to help facilitate the flow of useful information in a timely manner to members as well as non-members of the criminal defense bar, the public, and the media.

The publications committee shall assist in providing practical useful

information to help criminal defense practitioners better represent their clients in the day-to-day practice of law.  In striving to meet these goals, the Publications Committee will work closely with LACDL staff and other LACDL Committees to manage and plan publications. With the vital distribution of information to educate the public and LACDL members, there will be an increase in membership, interest in LACDL and helping to maintain the flow of practical useful information.
