Camille F. Gravel, Jr. Scholarship

Want to attend the National Criminal Defense College's Trial Practice Insitute? Apply to LACDL's Camille F. Gravel, Jr. Scholarship, which covers tuition and rooming for one of the Summer Sessions. The perennial deadline is March 1st.

The Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers offers the Camille F. Gravel, Jr. Scholarship to attend the NCDC Trial Practice Institue (TPI). Each year, NCDC presents two sessions of the Summer Trial Practice Institute on the campus of Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol, RI [previously, Mercer Law School in Macon, GA]. To be considered for this year's scholarship, applicants must complete the LACDL application by March 1st.

The Camille F. Gravel, Jr. Scholarship will be awarded once per year and administered by the LACDL. The recipient of the scholarship will be selected from applications submitted to LACDL. The recipient will always be a Louisiana lawyer, and preference will be given to those who regularly represent indigent defendants and have practiced more than 2 years, less than 15 years. The Gravel Scholarship pays for tuition and housing (double room only). Meals not covered by NCDC will NOT be reimbursed. Any travel expenses incurred are the responsibility of the scholarship recipient. The recipient of the Scholarship must agree to perform indigent defense service for at least one year from the conclusion of the NCDC session attended.

Keep in mind that the LACDL application does NOT serve as an application to NCDC. Visit NCDC's site at for their application. That deadline is March 30th. You do not have to submit a NCDC TPI application prior to applying to the LACDL scholarship, but we do encourage applying to NCDC if you are planning to attend, regardless of the scholarship. NCDC utilizes other scholarship programs and may be able to accommodate you, based on eligibility. Contact NCDC for more information.

“The National Criminal Defense College (NCDC) is more than a training—it is an enlightening experience on how to truly take a case to trial.  The faculty is great, the attendees are inspiring, and the network of NCDC lawyers I now have access to is invaluable.  Being a public defender in Orleans Parish can sometimes be intimidating.  Now, I bring an NCDC moxie to the representation of my clients when I proudly stand next to them in court.  Without the Camille F. Gravel Jr. Scholarship I never would have been able to attend NCDC because my office simply does not have the resources.  I am truly grateful for the scholarship and the experience it provided me in becoming a better advocate for the indigent of New Orleans.”
